#MinnesotaPredictionMarketBanBlocked
The ban on prediction markets in Minnesota will not happen now. A federal judge stopped it in time. This ban was supposed to start on August 1.. Judge Katherine Menendez said no it cannot be enforced until a final decision is made. This is a win for people who work with prediction markets.
What was this state law trying to do?
* It made operating prediction markets a felony, which's a serious crime.
* People who did this could have gone to prison for up to five years.
* They could have also been fined $10,000.
Governor Tim Walz signed this law on May 18. It was written in a way that would have made it very hard for companies to offer event-based contracts to people in Minnesota without breaking the law.
Some companies did not agree with this law.
1. Kalshi
2. Polymarket
3. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission
They went to court. Said that this law is not right. They said it is the job of the government to regulate these kinds of contracts, not the state. The judge agreed with them. She said that the Minnesota law probably goes against law. So she stopped the law from being enforced.
This decision is important for the country, not just Minnesota.
* If the court says that federal law is more important than state law in this case it will set an example.
* Other states will not be able to make laws.
* This means that event contracts will be regulated by the government not by each state.
For now the law that made prediction-market activity a felony in Minnesota is not, in effect. The judge made this decision quickly which shows how important it is. This is not the decision but it means that people will not be punished for doing this right now.
This decision is a sign that federal law can stop states from banning prediction markets. We will have to wait and see what the final decision is.
