On Tuesday, blockchain security company AmericanFortress unveiled a cryptographic scheme designed to protect cryptocurrency wallets from future quantum attacks without requiring fund migration, key rotation, or address changes. According to AmericanFortress's technical paper published on the Cryptography ePrint Archive, the scheme uses zero-knowledge proofs derived from a wallet's seed phrase while maintaining compatibility with existing seed-based hierarchical deterministic wallets on Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and other elliptic curve cryptography networks. The proposal enables nodes to verify proofs while users continue signing transactions with their existing keys. Bloomberg analysis cited by AmericanFortress estimates up to $470 billion in Bitcoin could be vulnerable to quantum attacks if sufficiently powerful quantum computers become available.
