Five Defendants Sentenced for Using Cryptocurrency USDT in 2.95 Billion Yuan Gambling Scheme Through Third-Party Payment Platforms

According to ChainCatcher, the Intermediate People's Court of Xilin Gol League, Inner Mongolia concluded a second-instance ruling upholding the conviction of Ma and four other defendants on illegal business operation charges. The defendants allegedly processed over 2.95 billion yuan ($409 million) in settlement transactions for gambling platforms between May 24, 2022 and October 18, 2023 through 105 merchants across 10 third-party payment companies, while receiving commissions and rebates in USDT and other virtual currencies via virtual wallets and bank transfers. Ma was sentenced to four years and six months in prison and fined 3 million yuan, while the other five defendants received sentences ranging from three to six years.
