Japan's Nikkei 225 Falls 1.49% on July 29 as Semiconductor Stocks Plunge

According to Yonhap News, Japan's stock market showed mixed performance on July 29. The Nikkei 225 index fell 930.73 points, or 1.49%, to close at 61,434.19, while the TOPIX index rose 10.44 points, or 0.26%, to 3,974.03. Semiconductor-related stocks came under heavy selling pressure, with SoftBank shares dropping over 7%, Advantest declining 2%, and Tokyo Electron falling over 10%. Kioxia plunged over 15% to break below the 40,000 yen level, down more than 60% from its record high in June. The selloff was driven partly by weakness in South Korea's KOSPI index, which fell over 12% during the session. A 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Kumamoto Prefecture also dampened investor sentiment, prompting Toyota to halt operations at three factories through July 31.
