Japan's Real Wages Rise 1.4% in May, Fifth Consecutive Month of Gains

According to Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on July 7, real wages in May rose 1.4% year-over-year, marking the fifth consecutive month of increases and the longest streak since 2021. Nominal wages per worker reached 311,165 yen (approximately $2,940), up 3.2%, marking the first time in 34 years that nominal wage growth has exceeded 3% for four consecutive months. The gains reflect wage increases from the 2026 spring wage negotiations and spillover effects from 2025 minimum wage hikes.
