OpenAI Chief Futurist Joshua Achiam Resigns After 9 Years, Effective July 24

According to a social media post, Joshua Achiam, OpenAI's Chief Futurist, announced on Wednesday (July 8) that he will resign effective July 24, concluding a nine-year tenure with the company. Achiam stated that the decision was personal, noting the timing felt right and the idea had been developing for some time. He joined OpenAI as an intern in 2017. In February 2026, his previous role leading the nonprofit mission advancement team was dissolved, and he was promoted to Chief Futurist, a position focused on assessing potential risks and benefits from AI advancement. Achiam emphasized that leaving the organization would not diminish his commitment to advancing AGI safety.
