According to Yonhap Infomax, South Korea's Climate Energy and Environment Ministry held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Shinan-Ui offshore wind project on July 16 in Shinan County. The project will install 390MW of capacity off the southeast coast of Ui Island in Jeonlanbuk Province, with total investment of approximately 34 trillion Korean won and commercial operation targeted for January 2029.
The project marks South Korea's first large-scale offshore wind facility developed with purely domestic capital and the first to deploy 15MW-class turbines. Participating companies include Hanwha Ocean, Korea Midland Power, SK Ecogenics, Hyundai Engineering and Construction, and LS Cable. The project is designated as the National Growth Fund's first investment initiative, with about 13 trillion won (40% of total costs) financed through the Advanced Strategy Industry Fund and Future Energy Fund.
