South Korea's Major Banks Introduce Corporate Debit Card Limits; NH Nonghyup Leads at 29% Market Share

According to Yonhap Infomax, on July 9, South Korea's major bank-affiliated card companies including KB Kookmin Card and NH Nonghyup Card are introducing or strengthening daily and monthly usage limits on corporate debit cards. The move follows a request from the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) to monitor and prevent money laundering schemes in which criminals purchase large quantities of commodity vouchers using corporate debit cards with no spending caps, then resell them for cash. NH Nonghyup Card, which accounts for approximately 29% of total corporate debit card transaction volume, is separately reviewing limits on gift card purchases in addition to existing daily and monthly caps. KB Kookmin Card, previously without usage limits, aims to introduce daily and monthly limits by the third quarter of this year. The five major bank-affiliated card issuers together account for approximately 98% of all corporate debit card usage in South Korea.
