South Korea's Southwestern Semiconductor Cluster Needs 6.3GW Power Verification Before Site Approval, July 9 Forum Says

According to Edaily, South Korean semiconductor engineers and policymakers held a forum on July 9 where experts called for immediate engineering verification of power infrastructure before approving the southwestern semiconductor cluster site. Professor Kim Kyung-ki from Daegu University's Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering stated that powering four memory semiconductor fabs in the region would require 6.3 gigawatts (GW) of continuous, uninterrupted electricity—equivalent to 4.5 units of 1.4GW nuclear reactors. He emphasized that semiconductor fabrication plants operate on a 24-hour uninterrupted power model, making power verification more critical than location selection. Renewable energy sources alone cannot meet the requirement, he added, noting that a comprehensive power supply system including nuclear plants, liquefied natural gas, and grid expansion is necessary for stable industrial operations.
