According to a joint report from Visa and Artemis, x402 protocol—launched in May 2025—has processed $15 million in transaction volume and 109.6 million transactions as of April 21, 2026. The protocol, developed by Coinbase and Cloudflare, serves AI agent-to-machine micropayments (transactions under $1), with activity concentrated on Base, Solana, and Polygon, settled primarily in USDC. The report also noted that Stripe and Tempo's MPP protocol, which launched in March 2026 with Visa participation, recorded $25,000 in transaction volume and 115,000 transactions in its first 33 days. Both protocols address emerging demand for high-frequency small-value payments between AI agents as blockchain settlement costs decline.
