China Says South China Sea Should Not Hinder China-ASEAN Ties; Wang Yi Meets Regional Leaders in Manila

According to China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, on July 22, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the China-ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Manila. Wang Yi stated that South China Sea disputes should not become an obstacle to China-ASEAN relations, and that both sides have the wisdom and capability to continue managing the issue effectively. China has reached important consensus with eight ASEAN nations on building bilateral community of shared destiny. Wang Yi expressed that China and ASEAN countries should maintain control over safeguarding South China Sea peace and stability, while excluding external interference and accelerating negotiations on the Code of Conduct for the South China Sea.
