ESMA Launches Crypto Custody Review of 280 Authorized Providers on July 8

According to ESMA, the European Securities and Markets Authority on July 8, 2026 launched a coordinated review of crypto-asset service providers' custody operations as the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation enters its active supervision phase. The Common Supervisory Action will assess the digital operational resilience of authorized providers across governance, key and storage management, transaction controls, incident response, and smart contract risks through the first half of 2027, with findings consolidated by mid-2027. The review covers a risk-based sample of providers among the 280 currently authorized under MiCA, responding to the regulator's supervisory priorities as the crypto-asset service provider sector rapidly expands.
