Tether Gold (XAUT), the gold token of Tether—the world’s largest stablecoin issuer—has officially been recognized by the Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) as an “Accepted Spot Commodity.” This means that financial institutions holding regulatory approvals in ADGM can legally offer services involving XAUT. According to DefiLlama data, Tether Gold’s total value locked (TVL) has reached $2.86 billion.
The Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) has formally recognized Tether Gold (XAUT) as an “Accepted Spot Commodity,” meaning that for financial institutions with regulatory licenses in ADGM, it is legal to provide related services involving XAUT without facing regulatory hurdles. Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said this certification paves a clearer path for regulated entities to offer XAUT services.
This recognition is Tether’s second regulatory product approval in ADGM: previously, ADGM accepted Tether’s USDT dollar stablecoin as an “Accepted Legal Tender Reference Token.” ADGM said this will support corporate growth by expanding the product and service scope of the financial hub.
Based on DefiLlama data, Tether Gold’s total value locked (TVL) has grown by more than three times over the past year, rising from about $826 million to about $2.86 billion, reflecting the ongoing increase in market demand for tokenized gold assets. Also, according to statistics from RWA.xyz, the following is reported:
Total Diversified Value of Tokenized Commodities: about $4.46 billion
Tokenized Commodities as a Share of the Overall RWA Market: nearly 13%
Total Size of the Tokenized RWA Market: about $34.73 billion
In June 2026, Bitcoin lending platform Ledn announced a plan to add XAUT to borrowing collateral later in 2026. This would allow customers to directly borrow funds using tokenized gold as collateral, without needing to sell the gold token they hold.
The expansion of this use case means that XAUT is no longer only traded as a spot commodity; it can also be used as a collateral asset in the lending market, complementing ADGM’s spot commodity recognition.
