According to Reuters, on July 14, twenty-six anonymous Meta employees sued the company in federal court in Oakland, California, alleging that AI-assisted ranking tools discriminated against workers with disabilities, pregnant employees, and those on medical leave. The plaintiffs claim Meta used tools including Metamate and productivity metrics that disproportionately harmed employees who missed work for medical or caregiving reasons, seeking to pause the scheduled July 22 layoffs. The lawsuit targets Meta's 10% global workforce reduction, affecting approximately 8,000 jobs. Meta stated the claims lacked merit and that workforce decisions were made by people, not AI.
