U.S. Navy's GARC Autonomous Vessel Hits Retired Amphibious Assault Ship USS Peleliu in RIMPAC Exercise

According to the U.S. Navy's Third Fleet, on July 17, the Navy's Global Autonomous Reconnaissance Craft (GARC) successfully struck the retired USS Peleliu, a Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship, during a naval sinking exercise off the coast of Kauai, Hawaii. The exercise was conducted as part of RIMPAC 2026, the world's largest multinational maritime training event. The GARC approached at high speed and struck the vessel's waterline with precision, marking the first official demonstration of a kamikaze autonomous water vessel's effectiveness against a major amphibious vessel. Video of the strike was released publicly by the Navy on July 25.
