Hackers attack Android users, withdrawing money from bank accounts remotely through 760 applications.
Cybersecurity experts have uncovered a large-scale attack campaign exploiting NFC wireless technology to steal financial data from Android users. According to the Zimperium research team, over 760 malicious applications masquerading as legitimate banking and government apps aim to trick users into setting them as the default payment method.
After installation, these applications will block sensitive information such as login names, card numbers, expiration dates, and EMV data in tap-to-pay transactions. Stolen data is sent to a network of over 70 control servers and private Telegram channels. Automated Telegram bots will coordinate and process the information. The campaign was detected in April 2024 and has now spread to Russia, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Brazil, targeting several major banks.
